Google Finally Listens To The Webmasters
While Google have for some time been at the forefront of online diagnostics and the analysis of websites, one area in which they have not been forthcoming is link analysis - until now.
There has always been the most basic of functions on the Google search engine which allows you to enter your website URL and receive a very bland and unhelpful display of all pages with a link to your site. While useful in certain circumstances, it was very hard to review in details as the number could literally run into 100s or even 1000s of pages.
After much questioning and requests from some of the more prominent webmasters, Google have now given in to the pressure and added a new tool to their Webmaster Tool. The new Google Webmaster Tools allows you to receive a clear and very helpful summary of sites linking to your website, with a total of the pages linking from each site.
The service splits the numbers between internal links - links from other pages of your website - and external links - links from pages and websites not under your control. There is also the option to filter certain criteria form the results, thereby giving the webmaster exactly what they require. As well as allowing you to drill deeper into the figures, there is also the opportunity to download the information to spreadsheets, etc for further analysis.

Up until now it has been the likes of Yahoo and MSN who have been more forthcoming with this information, but the recent addition to Googles service will pile yet more pressure on their rivals to come up with yet more ground breaking services to attract search engines users.

Google Zeitgeist Explained
Originally a German expression that means “the spirit (Geist) of the time (Zeit)“.
zeitgeist | Pronunciation: ‘tsIt-”gIst, ‘zIt | Function: noun | Etymology: German, from Zeit (time) + Geist (spirit) | Date: 1884 | Meaning: the general intellectual, moral, and cultural climate of an era.
A few thought about Google Zeitgeist “Popular does not mean the most frequently searched”. Zeitgeist is different from Overture since the process of getting the top most searches are different.
Wondering how Google Zeitgeist came out with the most searched ? For example the word “bebo” , “myspace”, and “rebelde” ? Obviously they filtered out X-rated keywords. What else ? What was the methodology ? Here is the answer, according to Artem Boytsov, a Google software engineer,
Instead, we looked for those searches that were very popular in 2006 but were not as popular in 2005 — the explosive queries, the topics that everyone obsessed over. To come up with this list, we looked at several thousand of 2006’s most popular searches, and ranked them based on how much their popularity increased compared to 2005. (”Bebo”, for example, had very little traffic in 2005.) We also gave a bit higher score to searches with more traffic. Similarly, our “what is” and “who is” lists are not necessarily the absolute most frequent searches, but rather those that best represent the passing year.
